Pocono Mountains Marathon and Ironman

April 2, 2011 by Pocono Talk Leave a Comment

The versatility of the Pocono Mountains landscape and weather provides great activities for your everyday life, as well as some larger scale events like the Pocono Mountains Run for the Red Marathon and new for 2011 the Ironman 70.3 Pocono Mountains.

6th Annual Pocono Marathon Run for the Red
This year is the 6th year for the Pocono Marathon which is a certified Boston Qualifier course so it attracts many people from out of the area as well.   This year it is on May 15th, 2011 and It raises money for the local American Red Cross of the Poconos (formerly the American Red Cross of Monroe County).  There are plenty of opportunities to either participate, volunteer or just be a spectator.  If you’re not familiar with the race and out driving that day be sure to take notice of the road closures to allow adequate time to get around.

1st Annual Ironman 70.3 Poconos
Not for the faint of heart, this year the Poconos will be the location of the  first Ironman-licensed race in the state of Pennsylvania.   Since it is the first year the details are still a bit unclear but being that the marathon has attracted so many athletes from outside the area I would think the Ironman would bring a similar volume of people to the area for this event.  It will start at 7:00AM on October 2nd, 2011 and will consist of the following:

  • Swim: 1.2 miles
  • Bike: 56 miles
  • Run: 13.1 mile

The location appears that it will be in and around Stroudsburg and will include the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
