Pocono Garlic Festival September 4th and 5th 2010

Pocono Garlic Festival at Shawnee

The Pocono Garlic Festival is this weekend at Shawnee – it runs on Saturday & Sunday  September 4th and 5th from 10AM to 6PM.

Every year we try to go but have never made it, something always comes up – this weekend is Labor Day so we’re unable to make it again.  My husband is a garlic lover so we’ll get there one of these years I’m sure!

Some details from their website:
A legendary local favorite!  Now in its 16th year, this event will once again fill the Poconos with the aroma of garlic-y goodness over Labor Day weekend.  Over 50 food and craft vendors will be offering everything from garlic vinegar and garlic ice cream to garlic-themed pottery and paintings.  A showcase of local musical talent on 3 stages, educational demonstrations and plenty of children’s activities make this a great family event!

Kids Parties in the Poconos

Kids Birthday Parties in the Poconos

Searching around for a place to have a birthday party for my son in the Poconos I could find very little information or ideas so I’ve compiled a list of places I’ve looked into before to give you some ideas.

Keep in mind each location is “your kid” dependent.  Are they really active?  Do they want to open presents in front of friends? Do you want to sing happy birthday?  How long of a party do you want?  Figure out your list of “must haves” and “negotiables” and narrow down a location from there.

Poke-A-Nose Pottery

http://www.pokeanosepottery.com

My son was invited to a birthday party in preschool at Poke-A-Nose Pottery, and he really seemed to enjoy it.  For that age I personally wouldn’t take on the challenge as little kids + breakable materials would have me too anxious.  But from what I could tell they all did well and had a great time, and as far as I know nothing got broken.  Because the room was smaller we were asked to drop our child off and pick them up later, the party was not too long(which is always good for young children), my son got to choose his own animal to paint, the mom brought cupcakes that the kid brought home and the presents were taken home to open.

Imagination Zone

http://www.bcizone.com

My son had his 3rd birthday party at the Imagination Zone in Brodheadsville, PA.  If you’re unfamiliar with it the Imagination Zone is the closest thing to a Chuck E Cheese in the Poconos (unless you want to head up to Dickson City area).  It was a great way to get all of the kids energy out and even though it was a calm day and there weren’t too many kids I’d still suggest having parents stay or at least have a few extra helping hands to keep eyes on the kids as there is no “check in/check out” method so if a kid really wanted they could walk right out.  For those looking for a no-clean up, easy party this was great – they have “themes” you can pick from(we chose Sponge Bob), so they provided the tablecloth, cups, hats, etc. so the only thing that we had to bring was cupcakes and goodie bags.  You get a room for a 2 hours which is nice to put presents in, if parents need ‘rest time’, and gives at least a little bit of privacy away from the main tables so you can wrangle all the kids into one spot.

Summit Lanes Bowling

http://summitlanesbowling.com
My son opted for a bowling party for his 6th birthday last year and his 7th this year as well.  It’s inside so we don’t need to worry about the heat or if it rains, and although it’s a bunch of kids in a confined area and they don’t have the room to really run around the majority of the kids seemed to be really intrigued with bowling so it worked out well.  All of the parents stayed but it’s organized enough that with a helper or two you could easily keep an eye on older kids to make sure everyone is all settled.  Some of the kids didn’t really bowl, others went multiple times, it’s one of those “go with the flow” activities.  For the kids that really want to bowl if the other kids don’t seem as interested let ones who are keep taking turns, eventually the others will join in.  The kids had a choice of pizza or a hot dog, we ordered an extra pizza for the parents, they had popcorn for a snack and were given a few tokens so they could play a game or two in the arcade before they left.  Overall it went well and was pretty affordable.

Details:

$8.95/child or $9.95 if Glow Bowling(only on Sat from 3-5)

Includes:

1 1/2 hours of bowling

Pizza, Hot Dogs, Soda, Popcorn, Paper Goods, 4 tokens

A few extra ideas:

- You can always rent a pavilion at parks that have them if you want to do something outdoors

- If you’re looking to travel a bit “Bounce-U” in Bethlehem/Allentown was a ton of fun (my son attended a party there), but looks very pricey http://www.bounceu.com/kids-birthday-parties/

- Chuck E. Cheese in Dickson City/ WilkesBarre: http://www.chuckecheese.com/parties/birthday.php is a bit of a drive but prices seem affordable and offer a lot and there is a bunch for kids to do.  They also have a check in/check out system for safety purposes.

There are plenty of other “party places for kids” in the Poconos, but hopefully those will give you at least a few ideas.

Crashes on 191 Near Mary Ann’s

On my way home the other day I saw a few police officers on the side of the road near Mary Ann’s Dairy Bar.  There was a car that looked like it crossed over the double line and landed on the grass on the Mary Ann’s side of the road.

Big deal? No…but having moved up to Henryville about 5 years ago I can’t count the number of times there have been accidents in that location.

The most memorable is happened a few years back when 2 teenagers were killed when they crashed into the big bolder right across from the dairy bar:

http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060801/NEWS/608010316

So then there was the accident yesterday(or just someone skidding off the road)

Then there was this today:

http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100721/NEWS/100729960

A few weeks ago someone actually crashed into the dairy bar itself:

http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100703/NEWS/7030342

Is anyone else noticing a pattern?  That stretch of road is very tempting for speeding, especially now that Penn Hills has gone to heck.  Mary Ann’s is the only business on that stretch and there is a very dangerous curve right before/after it.  If you’re heading from the Mount Pocono direction you are on a long stretch of road with a few passing zones and past the tunnel right before the Mary Ann’s turn.  Between speeding and an almost blind curve which directly across from it has people pulling out of it at slow speeds it’s a recipe for disaster.

Please take caution on this and all roads in the Poconos – it’s tempting open road, at the same time between the winding roads and plenty of deer and other obstacles it can often be treacherous or even deadly.

Mount Airy, Smoke Free Portion Room & Table Games

Mount Airy will soon have table games available, the tentative date is currently set at July 13th.  Also, a new smoke free room opened today which is welcome news to those of us non-smokers who hate to come home smelling like a cigarette.  Plus, I’m sure for those who stop by after work for a bit without wanting the spouse to know can get away with it a bit easier now :)

I’m not a gambler by any sorts, my husband and I figured we’d stop a few months back on a rare rare night out with the kids.  We’re only a few minutes away so it seems silly not to.

Having never been in a casino before I can’t compare it against much but it seems like your typical high end, flashy lights and sounds to get you excited to spend some money!

I can’t complain but I got carded 3 times simply to get inside, the one lady was like “mmm hmmm…sure I belive you now let me see your license”, heck I turn 30 this year and am having my 3rd kid this year, so getting carded is flattery to me :)

What I do know is we’ve gotten some nice tax breaks from the casino going in, I haven’t seen any traffic increase personally, and it doesn’t seem any more crowded around here then usual so it hasn’t turned out to be such a bad thing.

Route 715 Paved….What?!

It’s a day I never thought I’d see…they actually paved 715.  If you’re a local you know that road is one of the windiest, bumpiest, most accident ridden roads in all of the Poconos.

This past fall they started “work” which consisted of adding new grates on the side of the road.  Well, whether winter came quick or they just ran out of time there were GIGANTIC holes left over the winter that could literally swallow a person if you weren’t paying attention.

They added some cones in the spring – nice touch but still a major hazard on a road that has had more then it’s fair share of accidents and fatalities.  The lack of a guardrail doesn’t help either…but enough complaining.

The silver lining is that the road got paved, and quickly so at least it appears to have been widened and seems at least a little bit less bumpy.

I still avoid it like the plague, especially in the winter, but it’s definitely a welcomed improvement.

Where To Get Silly Bandz In The Poconos

Alright, so for many this might not be “news worthy” to most but keep in mind this is a blog, not CNN :)   The “craze” of the middleschoolers right now is these simple plastic wrist bands called “silly bandz”.  When my kindergartner came home and told me that he really wanted them a few months ago my response was “hunh?”.  He told me “we can get them at CVS mom”.  So on our next outing we went to the CVS in Stroudsburg and they happened to have them – the sales clerk told us we got lucky because they just got a shipment in and they fly off the shelves.

So today was my son’s Kindergarten graduation celebration so afterwards we told him we’d get him another pack of Silly Bandz (even though he’s collected a bunch at this point through trading and teachers handing them out as rewards).

So after 2 CVS trips, a Rite Aid, and Walmart we finally stopped at AC Moore at the recommendation of my husband which turned out to be a really good call because they had them!

Even though they’re priced pretty inexpensive ($5 for 24) they still tend to break and like any craze they’re in hot demand so if you’re looking to pick them up at least as of today they had plenty in stock at AC Moore in Stroudsburg.  Good Luck and Happy Silly Bandz Hunting!

**Note** I did check out their website http://www.sillybandz.com and it looks like you can order all of them online at the same cost (I assume there is a shipping charge) so if you’re not in a rush I’d definitely check out their website.

Kids, Pets, Cars, Heat Don’t Mix!

It amazes me that even in today’s world that I need to discuss something like this but it’s inevitable I’m going to see it at least a few times this year so I have to speak out now.  Please do not leave your children and pets unattended in the car…EVER!  Especially now that the weather is getting warmer.

I have already seen 2 sets of dogs left alone in cars (car not running, owner not around), we’ve already had 90 degree days and it doesn’t even take that much heat to cause a lot of damage.  I guess what I don’t “get” is why people do it?  I’m not talking about leaving a pet alone for 2 mins while you run into Wawa, but leaving a pet alone for a period of time as you go shopping or get dinner or go to church.  If you’re taking your pet out in the first place I assume it is because you care about them – then why would you leave them alone in a hot car that you can’t control the temperature and risk them dying?

If we bring our dog anywhere it’s because either a) We’re running errands that we’re not leaving the car (aka dropping checks off at the bank through the drivethrough) or b) Taking him somewhere because we’re going on a walk or something we’re doing outdoors that we’re bringing him for.  I wouldn’t even ever consider taking him out if I knew I had to leave him in the car.

Pets are one thing – It is something as a pet owner that definitely upsets me, but kids – that just makes me sick to my stomach.  I see at least 1-2 kids left unattended each year during the summer.  Again I’m not sure what the reasoning is but it’s really not worth it under any circumstances in my mind.

Two  instances stick out in my mind – the first was a hot summer day outside a local restaurant.  My husband ran inside to order takeout and I was in the car with our son (our second son wasn’t born yet) – I took a glance at the SUV next to me and noticed it was running but no one was in it.  I was trying to think why someone would leave their car running with no one inside – then I saw movement in the backseat – it was a baby, a baby baby in a carseat – they couldn’t have been more then 6 months to a year old.

1) The baby is alone in the car – at that age if the baby was to choke, cry, need anything there is no way for them to get help for themselves.

2) The car was running – I assume because the air conditioning was on.

3) The car was UNLOCKED.

So now not only is there a baby unattended in a car on a hot day(air conditioning or not) but there is an unlocked running car with keys in the ignition.  Now, I’m not a criminal, but if I’m looking to steal a car wouldn’t that be a pretty obvious and easy choice?  A car that is unlocked and running with keys?  What then happens if it does get stolen and there is a baby in the back? All that flashes through my head is that one episode of COPS or whatever where someone stole a car with a baby in the backseat and the guy throws the baby seat with the baby still in it out of a moving car at a high speed.  Luckily that baby was ok but seriously….

So my husband went in and ordered food, he comes back out about 5-10 mins later and I tell him what I’m seeing.  He sees the same thing and heads back inside to see if the owner of the car is around – he can’t find anyone that will fess up.  Finally a woman comes up and gets her takeout and he asks her if it’s her car – she says yes and he talks to her and from what he said she brushed it off, grabbed her food and left.  I see her come out, hop in her car and leave.  At that point I was in a mixture of shock and disbelief and didn’t want to make a scene with my little one in the car but I was beyond fuming.  The baby was left alone for at least 15-20 minutes, in a running car, with the doors unlocked – it makes me wonder, was that the baby’s mom or possibly a careless babysitter.  I want to say that there’s no way a mom would do that but it happens.

Again I don’t understand the reasoning – the baby is sleeping…ok then bring the baby seat in (at that age the seat just pops out and you don’t have to “disturb” the baby”.  Or ask the restaurant if they can’t do a “curbside pickup” of sorts and bring the food out to you – it wasn’t a chain that offered that service but I know of local restaurants that will do that (like Capri Pizza in Cresco) that are more then happy to walk your food out to you if you have kids in the car.

The second story I’ll try to make shorter – we went to Weis/MrZs to pickup a few things – hubby ran in to grab stuff and I stayed in the car with our kids.  I look at the van in front of me and think I see movement in the backseat – again the naive side of me doesn’t really register it at first then I notice that the movement I’m seeing is little hands moving – there were 2-3 kids in the backseat all in car seats.  Now they weren’t babies like the last incident but they were toddlers at best so even though they might be able to fend for themselves a little bit better you’re now at the point that they’re young but can still possibly do a bit of damage – like unlock a door, throw something at the kid next to them, etc.   I called my husband and told him and asked him to find a manager – I wasn’t the only one that noticed it and another concerned woman walked up to the car window and started talking to the kids.  It was another hot day but that car was not running so obviously there was no AC – being in the car with my kids I wasn’t about to leave them alone so I got ready to grab them out and go over when a manager comes out  followed by my husband.  I’m not sure that the manager knew what to do either and they all talked for a minute before the mom came out with a few bags of groceries.  The time that elapsed was a good 10-20 minutes that these kids were alone in a hot car unattended.  It took awhile for it to all unfold and the mom – well needless to say the other woman that saw this happen was not nearly as restrained as I think I would have been, but kudos to her because she gave that woman a verbal beating.  The moms argument was “they’re my kids I can do what I want” and the other woman’s argument was that she shouldn’t even be a parent then if she can’t properly take care of her kids.  They went back and forth for a few minutes, the manager still didn’t seem to know what to do, and we just watched then the mom got in her car and left.

What I didn’t know at the time is that it’s ILLEGAL to leave your kids in the car unattended.  Armed with that knowledge I sure as heck will be dialing 911 first as soon as I see an incident like this again.

I found this post and found some of the responses kind of shocking:

http://www.healthboards.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-75221.html

“911_mom
I agreed with leaving kids for just a minute until my experience yesterday. I always leave my 2 y/o in the car for just a second while I run into the gas station to get a pack of cigs. He has one of those car seats that just sits in the seat and uses the regular seat belt. Well, he crawled out of it yesterday and when I came out of the gas station, he was “Driving.” Ugh, I thought I was gonna die. People were gawking and one guy even said something when I came out about the keys being in the car. And to top it all off, I work at the local P.D. Oh, that would have been so embarassing if someone called them. From now on, he’s going in with me everywhere. I did wake up and realize how disastrous that could have turned out. And yeah, that is crazy about there not being an age limit to stay home alone. Someone called the p.d. the other day to ask that question and I had to go ask someone to find out the answer. They said it just depends on the maturity level of the child and that is up to the parents. I think that’s crazy!”

“Camden
I too, am guilty of leaving my kids in the car for short periods. I often leave the kids in the car if I will only be gone a minute and if they will be in my view because sometimes it takes less time to run in and out than it does to get them out of their seats and back in again.

I would never leave them alone in a city center(I am from a VERY small town, but I do most of my business one town over and it’s population is only about 2000.

I don’t have air conditioning so I usually roll down all windows and take the keys with me. I can tell you that when both my husband and I are there one of us will run into a store and the rest of us stay in the car and it isn’t any cooler with me sitting there!”

Are people just not concerned with their children being stolen?

“yoga1st
i will never leave the car running with the kids in it , i leave the windows cracked and i take the keys with me, i had a daycare kid whose mom always left her car running in my driveway while she picked her kids up and one time the two yr old popped it into drive and bashed into my car at least 4 times i was terrified since i just told my then 4 yr old to go get in the car what it he had been inbetween the cars!!! oh my god!! that was so scary so i don’t even allow running cars in my driveway if theres kids in the yard
and i always pay for gas at the pump we have an ampm that came into town i think 2 yrs ago and i have never even been in the store!!! but as for leaving my kids at the small convienince sp? store by my house and to get yelled at like that, i am just glad to know i am not the only one that leaves their kids in for just a minute ,, it would take me ten just to get them all in and out of the car!! not to mention all the whining in the store of i wants “
Opinions are opinions – and I’m sure a lot of people would argue against me about this but I just don’t see anything ANYTHING that makes it reasonable to leave your kids alone for any period of time alone in a car.  Some of the above posts try to reason it by “I cracked the windows” – seriously?  Yes it can be a pain in the butt to take your kids in to every store as you run around, but it’s called being a parent.  You find ways around it – you group your errands so you can run out one day of the week and leave them at home with your hubby, grandmom or a friend.  You schedule around them so you’re running errands after they’ve had lunch and a nap.  Or at the very least you bring them when you run inside.

I don’t need to run through the list of things that “can happen” – to me personally even if it’s a .00001% chance that leaving them alone they would get hurt, die or get stolen then it’s not remotely worth it, I could never live with myself if something happened.  It might be inconvenient but it’s something that as a parent you have to accept the responsibility of and find a way to deal with it.  When kids are at an age that they can not take care of themselves then you are the one that is solely responsible for their well being, this includes what they eat, how much tv they watch, etc.  Once they’re old enough to care for themselves then that’s the point where you know you taught them all you can and you can sit back and let them go, even if they do (and will) make mistakes.

As for pets you are their “voice” they solely rely on you for food, water, shelter, to take care of them.  They are always going to be “speechless” and need you to care for them, feed them and do what’s best for them but again that’s the responsibility of being a pet owner.

Yesterday was a beautiful day and we wanted to get out with the kids for some outdoor fun.  My husband and I ran through the list of places to go and we figured we’d head up to Tobyhanna State Park which we had visited a few times in the past.  This past winter/spring they had been renovating the bathroom areas and they were shut off for a short period of time but it looks like everything is open and completely operational.  We had our 2 kids (6 and 1 1/2 y/o) and our dog with us and decided to go on a walk.  This was going to be a bit complex – we have the 6 year old who is the easiest out of the bunch because our biggest worry with him is just having him not run ahead.  Our 1 1/2 year old we brought the stroller for and our dog who is an ‘only child’ so he tends to bark at everything that moves and constantly pulls as he walks.

I’ve learned over the years to come prepared so I got a bag before we left and tossed in a few bottles of water, some snacks, the dog leash, some diapers, a cup for the little one, etc. etc.  So it was pregnant me, the hubby, the 6 y/o, the 1 1/2 y/o, the hyper dog, a stroller, bag of stuff, cell phones, etc. and we headed off on a walk.  There were 4 trails to choose from – 2 difficult and 2 easy – the one was listed as being flat, gravel not recommended for handicap use but had been completed before with a wheelchair so we figured if that was possible then it should be reasonable for us to do with a stroller.  There were 2 paths, one straight path and another that looped around the lake – we chose the lake path and headed off.  We parked near the beach and a walked a little bit up to the right started on the trail, it looked like you could park at a bunch of places and start wherever you’d like but we figured we’d start there since it was close to where we had pulled in at.

The walk turned out to be great, the path wasn’t paved but it was a small gravel and really flat – there were a few larger rocks that stuck up but nothing too difficult to maneuver around.  The trail was almost completely shaded by trees and ran right along side the lake so you got a really nice cool breeze to cool you off as well.  It was in the mid-80s yesterday and I’m the first to get tired and hot while on a walk(especially being pregnant) but it was surprisingly not that hot since you were out of the sun the majority of the time.

We ended up walking for about 20 minutes then turned around and walked 20 minutes back – the total loop is 5 miles and says it takes about 2.5 hours and I knew with the kids and the dog we’d never make it that far.  It was a great walk, when we got back to the beach the kids relaxed and the dog cooled off(I think he was the hottest/most tired out of the bunch).  There is a playground right behind the beach as well and plenty of people were having lunch, spending time at the beach and relaxing.

The big thing with kids and any outing I think is knowing your limits, and your kids limits.  When are they going to be hungry and/or tired.  How much can you exercise and still have plenty of energy to chase after them and wrap everybody up to leave – our kids have limitless energy so the last thing I want to do is go for a really long walk, be exhausted and chasing after our lightning fast 1 1/2 year old.  Keeping all of that in mind I think we planned the trip pretty well, we all had a great time, got some exercise/outdoor time and everyone slept great – especially our dog.

Please read this and keep this in mind for if you ever go “off the beaten path”:

Visitors using more remote and undeveloped areas of Tobyhanna State Park should be aware that they could encounter old, unexploded artillery shells. Three types of shells have been found in the park. The largest projectile is 18 to 24 inches in length and about 6 inches in diameter. The medium projectile is 2.5 inches in diameter and from 10 to 14 inches in length. The smallest projectile is 3 inches long and 1.25 inches in diameter. Shells are found in severely rusted condition without any recognizable markings or imprints. Their overall appearance is that of a pointed cylinder of rusted steel. Visitors encountering such items should not touch, attempt to move or otherwise disturb the items, and should call the park office and report the location to insure proper disposal.

Mollies For Breakfast

2 Weekends ago it was a rare occasion that we were all up early, no school, and the “cranky” factor was at a minimum (anyone with kids knows eating out with cranky kids is not exactly fun).  We decided to head out for breakfast and wanting to try somewhere we hadn’t been before we decided to go to Mollie’s in Stroudsburg.  My husband had been there a few times before with his dad and brother for lunch but I personally never had been and nor had we ever taken our kids there.

The first thing I noticed as soon as I walked through the doors was that there was a good “aura” about the place.  You know what I’m talking about – you walk into some place new to eat and either get that good “this could be nice” or the awkward “lets ‘grab a menu’” and run out of here.  The “let’s get out of here” have been far and few between – but getting a really good vibe from a place is always a good thing.

So we sat down and ordered breakfast, they were very accommodating to the fact that we had kids and everything went very smoothly.  Our waitress was nice, the prices were really reasonable, the food was good, overall it was a really nice experience.  If you’re looking for a good breakfast they’re definitely a place to check out – for the same prices or less then the local “chains” it’s definitely worth it to stop by for a change of pace and a nice quiet breakfast in town.
