Many Pocono Schools Closed Tuesday January 7th, 2014 Due To Cold Weather

January 6, 2014 by Andrea Kimes Leave a Comment

Many area schools including the Pocono Mountain School District, Pleasant Valley School District, East Stroudsburg and Stroudsburg will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 7th due to extreme weather conditions(aka it’s going to be too darn cold!).

It should go without saying, but if you’re going out make sure you are bundled up, have a full tank of gas, charged cell phone, water and other supplies just incase. Β Do not leave pets outside, make sure your kiddos are bundled up(ideally just keep them inside). Β And be sure to take precautions to avoid freezing pipes and other cold weather related damage.

It was a balmy 50 degrees earlier today, so if you haven’t seen the weather tomorrow is bound to knock you off your feet. Temperatures will be in the single digits but it will feel as low as -17 degrees

Long story short, it will be COLD tomorrow. Don’t get too excited that at last winter has settled in, by the weekend the temps will be back up in the high 40s with rain predicted.

Local Temperature Map

Updated Jan 6, 2014, 7:45pm EST

… WIND CHILL WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 6 AM EST WEDNESDAY…

* HAZARD TYPES… EXTREMELY DANGEROUS COLD AND WIND.

* WIND CHILL VALUES… .AS LOW AS 25 DEGREES BELOW ZERO.

* TIMING… LATE TONIGHT THROUGH EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING. TEMPERATURES WILL BE FALLING 3 TO 5 DEGREES AN HOUR THROUGH 1 AM TUESDAY AS THE ARCTIC AIR ARRIVES.

* IMPACTS… PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO THE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS COLD AND WIND MAY LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA AND FROSTBITE IN A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. ADDITIONALLY WATER PIPES IN CRAWL SPACES ALONG THE EDGE OF THE HOME OR ALONG OUTER WALLS CAN EASILY FREEZE.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A WIND CHILL WARNING MEANS THAT THE COMBINATION OF VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS WILL CREATE VERY DANGEROUS LOW WIND CHILL VALUES. LIMIT YOUR TIME OUTSIDE.

TURN YOUR HOME THERMOSTAT UP NOW TO ALLOW YOUR HOME TO BE A LITTLE WARMER. ALSO POSSIBLY ALLOW A TRICKLE OF WATER TO RUN THROUGH YOUR FAUCET OVERNIGHT AND TUESDAY. THESE TWO ACTIONS MAY PREVENT WATER PIPES FROM FREEZING AND EVENTUALLY BURSTING.

ANY SPACE HEATER USE MUST BE WITH UTMOST SAFETY IN MIND.
