Snow Totals For Last Week 0

Mar1

Last week my son got out of school early on Tuesday due to the weather.  That night and into Wed we got about a foot of snow.  Over the next few days we had snow showers then another storm hit on Friday and ended up with 2+ feet for the week.  With the snow drifts there were some spots in our yard measuring up to 3+ feet while parts of the driveway the snow was blown away to barely an inch.

It was definitely a snowy week and although it has warmed up over the weekend to allow a bit of the snow to melt(which is good because the roads are 100% clear), there are still mounds of snow left.

Down in the Stroudsburg area they only received a few inches – as we traveled up past Mount Pocono today you could see areas where it looked like a good 3-4 feet total were cut out.  With the heavy wind causing drifts I doubt anywhere got more then 3 feet total, but it sure looks like it is more.

Spring is right around the corner but I’m not totally counting out another snow storm before the winter is done.  It is usually pretty chilly well into April so we still have at least another month and a half to go before we can seriously start thinking about Spring.

Big Storm ‘a Comin? 0

Weather Map Snow Coming February 2010 Snow

After a VERY uneventful winter so far we look like we might actually be getting some REAL snow accumulations.

We had 2 maybe 3 storms that actual required a bit of snow clearing – besides that it was some light shoveling but that was about it.

There have been a few what they’re calling “coastal storms” that have passed by just to our South.  Typically The Poconos is where snow hits pretty hard in PA, Philly might get some, out West gets a bit, but the Poconos is typically a sure thing for some decent snow accumulations.

This year it has been the exact opposite – my parents live in Philly(though they’re moving this year) and have gotten 2 HUGE storms recently with over 20+ inches each storm.  The last storm that hit this past weekend we literally got a dusting – it wasn’t even enough to cover the ground.  But a few hours South Philadelphia got their 2nd biggest snow storm EVER!

How there can be such a HUGE difference I’m not sure, and how the ‘flop’ has occurred this year I’m not sure of either.

Like most people this time of year I’m in an antsy stage.  I love snow, love the winter but going long periods of time with no snow to make it feel like winter but having the cold dreariness…it doesn’t make for sunny times.  A lot of people I talk to are more then ready for the winter to be over.  Unfortunately we still have cold spells well into April – if you’re planning a spring wedding in the Poconos and are looking for warm weather be sure to do your homework.

So as I post this there is the occasional snowflake passing – it is suppose to start snowing heavily in the next couple of hours and continue until midnight tomorrow night.

Working from home has it’s advantages for sure – not having to shovel out the car tomorrow is definitely one of them.  We had some meetings today, caught up on work projects and were able to pick up some last minute items.  Tomorrow if it snows like it should, it will be a great day to work – there’s something calming and seems like I have the extra ability to focus as I glance outside and see all that snow.  Well, at least I hope I get to see “all that snow” – there was a big storm predicted not too long ago that didn’t even drop a flake.

I’d like to know from a meteorologists point of view how difficult it really is.  I understand it can be an iffy thing and it is not an exact science, but they’re wrong enough…really really wrong enough that people don’t even hold them accountable.  Can you imagine that in any other business?  “Your car will be ready tomorrow”.  “Nope, not today maybe the next day…”  People would be out of business!

Ah well, if you have to weather the storm tomorrow(pun intended) please be extra safe and take your time traveling.  If you’re home tomorrow then enjoy the day!

Finally, Some Snow! 0

Jan30

We got some much needed snow at the end of this week so it finally actually looks like winter again in the Poconos!  The temperatures have dropped as well so it is a perfect weekend to hit the slopes.

I’d take advantage of the cold and snow while we still have it – although I’m sure there’s still plenty of winter left to be expected – I’d get out there and do any winter activities now because before we know it Spring will be here.
I am hoping that we will get a storm soon that will bring at least a couple of inches so I can get the kids out sledding.  There is enough snow right now to cover the ground but not really enough to go sledding.  Our youngest is 15 months and a little daredevil – don’t ask me how he manages to get in as much trouble as he does but if there something to knock over, a way to fall down, something to run into he’s sure to be there.  I know sledding would be right up his alley, I think snowtubing is past his age and tolerance limit to be outdoors but that’s something to look forward to in the coming years.

If you’ve gone skiing, boarding or tubing this year be sure to leave a comment and let us know about your experiences and how you’d rate where you went :)

Advanced Auto Parts in Bartonsville 0

Jan6

The Bartonsville Plaza on 611 is one of the newer retail spaces that has been built in the past couple of years.  The majority of the stores opened not too long ago with the most recent addition being Sonic.  There is already a Dunkin Donuts, Moe’s, Adam’s Jewelry, Verizon Wireless Center, Ichiban(hibachi), a pet store, GameStop and more.

Right behind Sonic there is a building being constructed and a sign went up recently showing that it will be an Advanced Auto Parts center.  Additional lanes have been added in front of that plaza up past the Lowes and Giant plazas near Interstate 80 and it has helped to alleviate some of the traffic.

Balloon Entertainment at Texas Roadhouse in Stroudsburg 1

Dec7

The Texas Roadhouse in Stroudsburg was put in a few years back and is located right in front of the Stroud Mall.  I didn’t eat there for at least a year after it opened but after being invited on a few different occasions for fundraisers we decided to give it a shot the one night.  It’s a chain steakhouse, good food, good service and reasonably priced.  From Mon – Thurs from 4pm to 6pm you can get specials for $7.99 per person which includes a starter(salad), the meal & a side.  The portions are a decent size, not huge but definitely stuffing.

We stopped by tonight in the midst of doing Christmas errands and towards the end of dinner was approached by a friendly fellow in a cowboy hat who introduced himself as Mark.  He explained that he is at Texas Roadhouse every Monday night from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.  I notice every time we go to eat there we are placed in the same section so I’m assuming the outer areas are marked “people with kids” so as he came through that section he was stopping at tables and making balloon animals.

They weren’t just any balloon animals though, you’ve seen the “pick a sword or a poodle” type of balloon artists.  My son asked for a dragon and that is what he got – the thing was BIG for a balloon animal, my son was incredibly happy and it attracted quite some attention as we left.

Mark doesn’t just do balloon animals though, he is also a magician and as his business card states he does “Magic, Hypnosis, Stilts, Juggling and Balloon Sculptures”.  He does both childrens parties and corporate events.

You can check him out at Texas Roadhouse on Mondays from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, on Myspace or call 570-424-9947

It provided a bit of extra fun to our family dinner out, it was totally free and if you’re looking to eat and occupy the kids a bit it’s something to think about.

Some road “know how” when traveling in the Poconos 1

Dec6

We got our first significant snowfall of the winter yesterday that dropped anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of snow across the Pocono region.  Up in Mount Pocono where I live we got about 5-6 inches, and this morning traveling down into Stroudsburg I’d be surprised if they got more then 2 inches.  Although the entire Pocono region is known for it’s snow and winter activities, there is definitely a weather difference as you travel throughout the area.  Some areas will receive a dusting of snow and the roads are well plowed and salted, where other areas will receive a significantly amount of snow and the roads are very poorly maintained.

If you plan on visiting the Poconos for vacation or visiting in the winter, you really need to take into consideration the location of the Pocono Resort or Pocono Rental you’re staying at, especially depending on what type of vehicle you drive.

If you are traveling in the “main areas” of of the Poconos like downtown Stroudsburg, Route 611, Interstate 80 the roads are typically well plowed and well salted in the winter.  You may encounter increased traffic throughout the holiday and winter season, especially right before a snowstorm hits, but beside that there are usually you really shouldn’t encounter many obstacles.  The roads themselves are usually clear and if there is a danger it is usually other drivers or ice that become an issue.

If you are visiting the Poconos and venture out a bit further off the main roads and it’s your first time visiting the area you really need to be cautious.   Many of the roads in the Poconos are not well maintained, and not just the surfaces after it snows, but they have large potholes and even larger drainage ditches and holes.  At least a few times a year you will see someone that pulled over to the side of the road stuck in the snow in a ditch because they didn’t realize there was a huge drainage ditch on the side of the road.

Many of the back roads are either not paved, poorly paved or are just extremely windy and dangerous.  Even when traveling to some of the best known ski locations, like Shawnee Mountain and Camelback Mountain, the roads in the winter can be very treacherous unless you have a vehicle with 4 wheel drive that handles well in winter weather conditions.

One of the worst roads hands down is Route 715 – I still have yet to figure out why they don’t place guardrails along parts of that road.  Sadly many many people have accidents on that road which is probably the worst combination of elements you could have – it’s a very curvy road, it is very hilly, there are steep drop offs in parts on either side, there are MASSIVE drainage holes and ditches that they were “fixing” that should have covers but they don’t.  When I say hole I mean I could fit a few people standing up it in no problem – they are a serious hazard and I am clueless as to why they are not being addressed before someone gets seriously injured this winter.

A good rule of thumb when driving in the snow in the Poconos is to just stay on the road – if you must pull over make sure you do it in a driveway or some place that is well light so you know you’re on safe grounds.  Although most residents in the area are more then happy to lend a helping hand to a stranger in need, there are many places off the beaten path where you may not find help for awhile.

Even in on the best road the unexpected can happen and leave you stranded, case in point the Valentines Day disaster of 2007 where people were stuck on Interstate 80 for over 20 hours in freezing conditions.

I would always rather be over prepared then under prepared, so here is my list of must haves to keep in your vehicle during winter travel:

Water
At least a gallon or two.  It costs next to nothing and is a MUST if you are ever stranded.   You can live without food for a lot longer then water, if you have children, pets, it is something vital you would need if ever stranded for an extended period of time.

Food & Snacks
I often bring something to snack on road trips regardless, but I like to keep “extras” in the car – peanuts, granola bars, trail mix, food that I typically will not be tempted to snack on, that lasts for a long period of time so I’m not concerned about it expiring and that would be very sustainable if it was the only thing I had to eat.

Safety Kit
A car safety/emergency kit will usually carry a number of useful things – ours has a blanket, reflectors and basic medical supplies including band aids.

Hat & Gloves
Keep a small box with gloves, hats and a possibly scarves stashed somewhere in the car.  If you have room keep an extra blanket or two in the car as well.

Cell Phone Charger

Although most people keep one in their car anyway a cell phone is your one lifeline(unless you have onstar) to be able to get in contact with help and it does you no good if it’s dead.  If you ever get stuck start charging your phone right away incase the car battery dies and only use it when absolutely necessary to save battery life.

The items above are a good start but make sure you adjust what you need according to your family – if you have someone who is diabetic, asthmatic, needs medication or special care be sure to keep additional supplies on hand for them as well.

Am I missing any items that you think are a “must have” to keep in the car during the winter?  Have you experienced the negative side of driving in the Poconos in the winter? I’d love to hear your story.
