Seeing the enthusiasm of children trick-or-treating, definitely brings out my inner child and adds to the excitement of the fall season.  I love decorating for Halloween, handing out candy, and yes even dressing up.    I’m not ashamed to admit my husband and I dressed to the nine’s last year to hand out candy and to take our son out trick-or-treating.  Our outfits might have been a tad much for our quiet community but we definitely fit in when we went to Stroudsburg.

Let’s get straight to the point - you can go trick or treating multiple places on different days!  Coming from the suburbs of Philly this was an amazing surprise for me when I moved to the Poconos.  Now I’m not trying to advocate the biggest candy heist in history or having sugar poisioning well into next year…nor taking advantage of the generosity of neighborhoods that you don’t belong to, but it gives options.

Option 1 - Take advantage of being able to visit friends and family.

You will need to schedule accordingly but its very possible that you can not only trick or treat in your own neighborhood but spend a different day visiting friends and relatives as well.

With multiple days of Halloween we went with Grandma “trick or treating” (aka showing off the baby to neighbors) one day, we visited aunts, uncles and friends another day and were still able to hand out candy at our own house on yet another day.  

Option 2 - Giving and Receiving

If are like me and enjoy giving candy as much as getting it then definitely entertain the option of being able to do both!  Check the local newspapers or community letter to see when trick or treating for your neighboorhood is.  If you live in a neighborhood where you rarely get trick-or-treaters then plan a day with your friends or family to hand out candy at their house so you can experience the joy of giving and then pick another day to go out.

Option 3 - The Ultimate Halloween Candy Collection, 2007

This option probably appeals most to teenagers and ESU students but I’m sure there’s a few young looking parents that would like to try it as well.  Talk with your friends and family and compile a list of when every community and town is having their Halloween.  It spans at least 3 days if not more and although most communities do not publicly advertise their trick-or-treating days if you’re only visiting areas of friends and family who are members then it won’t matter.  The biggest bang for your buck persay is definitely Stroudsburg on Halloween evening.  Visiting different neighborhoods will allow extra bonding time with friends and will get some extra mileage out of your costume but Stroudsburg alone is usually enough to satiate any candy fiend.

Option 4 - Stick to Stroudsburg

Stroudsburg has many beautiful old houses that people decorate incredibly, if you only have one day you want to go out, take the opportunity at least one year to go to Stroudsburg and to look around.  Be forewarned - many of the roads are blocked off so it is not that driving friendly but is excellent because it drops that additional danger for people walking around.  Because it is such high traffic the candy does not usually last that long even though I’m sure they try to prepare properly each year.  So if Stroudsburg is where you want to go be sure to get there early, get parking and hit up what you can while you can.

Things to Remember

- Check the Pocono Record or your local paper for dates and times

- If you live in a community  know when your day and time is, don’t get caught offguard in a new neighborhood!

- It’s not just about the candy, take advantage of multiple days to show off the kids outfits to your friends and family and get some extra time together
