Hawley, Pa – July 11, 2017 – Classic rock ‘n’ roll, soda shop eats and cutting-edge science come together Saturday, July 29, at the Boiler Room as The Everly Set plays Hawley in a fund-raising dinner-concert for the Rett Syndrome Research Trust.
Tickets to the event, called “All You Have To Do Is Dream,” include a 1960’s malt shop dinner experience catered by the Settlers Hospitality, followed by a show with The Everly Set. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, tater tots, crispy cole slaw, salads, milkshakes and malteds, cupcakes and more will be on the menu for the evening. The Everly Set is a duo led by Sean Altman, founder of the legendary a cappella group Rockapella and co-author of the catchy title song from the popular PBS children’s series “Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?”. Altman won’t be looking for Carmen in Hawley, though; instead he and singer-songwriter Jack Skuller will be rediscovering some of early rock’s greatest songs in a show they call “Sean Altman and Jack Skuller Approximate the Everly Brothers.”
Their tight-knit harmonies capture Everly Brothers chart-toppers like “Bye Bye Love,” as well as classic tunes by the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and other artists of the era. The concert is being presented by Neil Genzlinger, whose brother Grant and sister-in-law Jeanne are well known hoteliers and restaurateurs in Hawley via properties that include the Settlers Inn and the Ledges Hotel. Neil’s daughter Abby has Rett syndrome, a devastating neurological disorder that affects speech, mobility, cognitive functions and more.
It was Jeanne and Henry Skier of Harmony Presents who suggested making the show a fund-raiser for the Rett trust, which is pushing forward some of the most innovative research in science today.
“Initially I just wanted to bring Sean and Jack, who I’d heard perform the Everly Set in New York, to Hawley because I thought they’d sound great in the Boiler Room,” Neil Genzlinger said. “To have Abby’s aunt and her friends suggest making it a fund-raiser for Rett syndrome is a lovely gesture that means a lot to our family and to thousands of other girls and women with Rett syndrome, especially with research at such a crucial point.”
The trust, a 501c3 nonprofit that was founded in 2008 by another Rett parent, Monica Coenraads of Connecticut, has financed millions of dollars’ worth of groundbreaking research that includes the possibility of intervening on the genetic level to correct the effects of Rett syndrome, something that was the stuff of science fiction back when the Genzlingers first received the Rett diagnosis for Abby back in 1999.
“Back then, parents were told basically to learn to live with it,” Neil Genzlinger said. “Now there’s hope, and a lot of excitement.”
“All You Have To Do Is Dream” takes place in the Boiler Room at the Hawley Silk Mill located on the ground floor at 8 Silk Mill Drive.
